Your comments to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are needed!! Comment sheet and snail mail address forms are attached. You can also email the comment sheet (see email address below) Please help the Town obtain funding for the SMART SCALE Walnut Avenue Improvement Project.

VDOT held a Public Hearing on 3/21/17 to receive comments on projects that have been scored and recommended for funding through the VDOT SMART SCALE prioritization process. Even though the public hearing has already been held, you can still submit comments it by email or snail mail by Tuesday, May 16, 2017. Please see attached comment sheet that can be snail mailed to VDOT or emailed to: Six-YearProgram@VDOT.Virginia.gov

Comments from our citizens could be the difference in the project being funded or not funded. The Town really needs comments to be submitted for the Town's SMART SCALE Walnut Avenue Improvement Project from 5th Street to W. Lee Avenue: Curb, Gutter, Sidewalk and Bicycle Lane Striping, Lighting, and ADA Ramps. As of right now, the recommendation is to fund only 21 Projects in the Salem District under the 2016 SMART SCALE program funding. Based on the scoring, the Town's Walnut Improvement Project is currently ranked 22nd.

Some suggested points to put on your comment sheet as to why Project #1169 - Walnut Avenue Improvement Project, should be funded are as follows:

- Walnut Avenue is an existing well-traveled right-of-way between Bedford County and East Roanoke County to the City of Roanoke. VDOT's 2015 Annual Average Daily Traffic on Walnut Avenue is 5,800.

- The proposed sidewalk and bike lanes will provide connections to and from the existing City of Roanoke Tinker Creek Greenway and the under construction Glade Creek Greenway from the Town of Vinton and City of Roanoke neighborhoods and commercial areas.

- The Town has seen an increase in traffic since the completion of its downtown revitalization project. Many new businesses have located in Vinton due in part to the revitalization project.

- New development in the Vinton downtown area includes: Roanoke County's Vinton Downtown Branch Library; Farmers' Market and Stage area improvement; Twin Creeks Brewery; Star City Play House; Roland E. Cook Lofts (21 market rate apartments); and the proposed conversion of the former William Byrd High School into 80 market rate apartments; etc.

Thank you in advance for taking time to submit comments to VDOT on the SMART SCALE Walnut Avenue Improvement Project.
