September is National Preparedness Month

At the September 5, 2017, Town Council meeting, a Proclamation recognizing September as National Preparedness Month was passed by Council.

As our thoughts are still centered around the devastation and loss in Southeast Texas from Hurricane Harvey and now as our attention turns to the impending danger associated with Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean, Florida and possibly the Southern US, we all should think how individually we must stay ready for disasters.

September has been proclaimed as National Preparedness Month and serves to remind all citizens of the importance of being prepared in case of any type of emergencies. This applies to everyone in the Town of Vinton.

This year’s theme is “Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can.” The emphasis again this year continues to be on preparedness, particularly for the youth, elderly and persons with disabilities.

There is a website that we should all become familiar with: www.Ready.Gov/make-a-plan. Download and fill out the plan so it will help you cover your bases.

1. We should all be informed and know what disasters could affect us in our area.

 2. We should make a plan.
  • How will you receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  • What is your shelter plan?
  • What is your evacuation route?
  • What is your family/household communication plan? How do you communicate it to your family?
  • Take into consideration specific needs for your family: such as how friends and family can assist you with communications, the care of children, and pets and any specific needs that your family may need to consider such as special medical equipment, or do you have enough prescription medications.
3. Practice your plan with your family because the best laid out plans are useless if you do not practice how to use them.

Let's all be safe and be prepared.
